Abstract:
South Asians1 have always been on the move. Buddhist and Hindu missionaries carried their message in all directions in early centuries and the whole South East Asian region was influenced by Indian trade, culture and religion. Much later, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Indians spread through the British Empire, to work on plantations, to build railways or to trade, particularly in East Africa.
